At that time, I seem to remember that Apple had quite a bit of content that DRM free ( iTunes Plus???). Around Jan. 2009 was when they dropped DRM on music entirely. You could also burn your protected music to an audio CD from within iTunes and get an unprotected version that way.

Sorry but going by memory here and I was not purchasing much digital music at that time.
