But, nonetheless, there clearly is a way for the PID to be retrieved through software. The CyBook's "About" screen can retrieve it, and the MobiPocket Desktop reader can even read it remotely via a USB connection.

Perhaps someone could examine the code for the Mobi Desktop Reader and see how it's retrieving the PID.
