Trollope, Anthony: The Three Clerks, v.1, 3 March 2008.

(1857-8)
With an Introduction by W. Teignmouth Shore.
Trollope’s sixth novel, written mostly in railway carriages while he was travelling on Post Office business. The novel is though to have autobiographical elements, particularly in the description of the civil service entrance examination.
It also contains the first appearance of the barrister, Mr Chaffanbrass..

Three young clerks in the civil service fall for the three daughters of a clergyman. They also get into scrapes, sometimes into more serious trouble and one of them takes up writing.
