Thanks for replying, Kovid. It was disappointing to find that the problem is my device but slightly gratifying to find that it wasn't that I was doing something wrong. I wanted to try converting to Epub before I answered and then my internet went out for a day and a half and I couldn't get back here.

So.....going the Epub/Sigil/AZW3 route worked, but it's quite a convoluted process as you said. I'll probably only do it for very large books or 'special' books that don't have a ToC. I have several 150+ year old books that I'd like to clean up just because no one else has. I don't know if I'll be able to do a nice enough job to offer them here but we'll see.
