That's because they had a de facto standard (also a monopoly) for developers to write to (Windows) without a strong competitor in the second spot.

Apple has never been number one in hardware sales, but it made sure that app development for its platform outgrew what its hardware sales say it should have been.

Even when Android takes number one in hardware sales, there is no way that Google is going to convince developers to stop developing for the iPlatform. It's simply proven to be too rich a market. Apple will continue to be a growing and profitable number 2, 3, 4, or 5. Android just can't have a typical kill-our-competitors-at-will monopoly like MS did. No way, no how.

Thats why I said Jobs is not just a technical visionary, he's a really good businessman too.
