I'm not sure what's so wrong with the original idea of keeping people's reading records in one big thread in the social group. Sure it's not ideal, but I reckon the KISS principle applies here.
What do I know however is, if yet another New Great Improved Way of Doing Things(tm) comes along, I might just get bored and go back to spending my time reading instead of goofing around with this.
