  1. What operating system is on computer #1, where calibre was installed?
  2. What operating system is on computer #2, where you tried to connect the external HDD to?
  3. Why are you trying to copy calibre, instead of installing it separately on computer #2? (Calibre is donationware so there is no mandatory cost for any install(s), regardless of number performed.)
  4. Why are you moving the external HDD? Moving your ebook collection (called a Library) around with you is fine, but perhaps what you're trying to do is better handled in some other manner.
I think that is enough to start to understand what you're trying to do and try to get some instructions together for you. If not, I'll ask more questions.
Perhaps it would be better to be a little clearer and a LOT simpler. New questions:

@Chuck Reid
  • Are you trying to transfer your info to a newly-bought computer?
  • Are you trying to use your calibre library on multiple computers that are currently in use?

If you are merely trying to transfer your info to a new computer, then just copy the Calibre Library folder to your external HDD. (Or use the Move library feature I explain later.)

If you have multiple computers you would like to use your calibre library on:

I am going to assume you are on Windows.

You need to download Calibre Portable and "install" it to your external HDD.

It uses a special launcher to make sure all your settings are stored on the external HDD instead of in %APPDATA% on your computer. Run the portable installer, point it at your external HDD and then copy your library to the external HDD. You can do this directly from calibre -- see screenshot #1 to manage libraries, and screenshot #2 to use the move library feature. Or you can do it through the File Browser.

The library MUST be moved to within the Calibre Portable folder, and preferably to the subfolder "Calibre Library".
