Being in the US Army IT business, I was aware of hard drives in copiers, scanners, printers, etc. In fact we have to clearly label those machines with the level of security that they are authorized to handle, and when the machines are disposed of, the hard drives have to be removed and degaussed or otherwise destroyed.

I was not, however aware of how easy it is to retrieve that data.
