I own older generation of Reader PRS-500
For me personally, rtf turned out to be the best format.
To convert lit files, I "unpack" lit file using commandline convertlit program and then I run resulting html file through a primitive conversion tool that I wrote to get rtf.
Often the html file 'inside' lit file has been generated by MSWord so it is an incredible mess. You might wish to run it through
html tidy
