You are right, as far as the longdesc attribute is concerned, EPUBReader is not OPS compliant. Using an internet browser for the rendering of the content pages has many advantages, but has the disadvantage that the epub reader has the same limitations as the browser.
It seems to be that the longdesc attribute isn't supported by any of the major browsers:
