Yeah, it may even be OK on bigger 10" tablets. It would be great in a Surface I think. The weight is probably too much for a reader though. And I'm not convinced on the durability and longevity.
But its biggest obstacle to overcome will certainly be the intent of manufacturers to sell you online storage and/or charge you 10-20x their cost for an upgrade. That's why so many devices are so woefully under spec'd when it comes to memory. 64GB should be standard on tablets.
