The default off (using the switch) does put it to sleep if you just slide it... using the switch doesn't turn it off fully unless you slide and hold it for around 10 seconds at which point you get a message on screen to confirm you want to switch it off...

When you next switch it on it comes to life almost instantly.
I believe it uses very little power on sleep but booting it up or shutting it down consumes rather more.
This is quite a nifty feature and one Sony use on most of their mp3 platers also.
