Most likely they used Kindlegen, which embeds the source files along with actual .mobi file, which could easily double the size. You could use
Kindlestrip.py to get rid of them, but I don't know if KDP will accept .mobi files without embedded source files.
You can test whether their .mobi file contains the source files with
7Zip or other multiformat archivers.
