2.3.1 is the latest generally available firmware. It shouldn't be behaving like that and has for me. It could be hardware. If the problems you described happened on a PC, the advice would be to test the memory and the drive. It is possible the device has faulty memory. As you bought it overseas, that does make it a problem to exchange it. Maybe you can contact Kobo directly.
