I think you're getting to Google, but it's actively refusing to service the request
I think I've read somewhere here that repeated queries from the same IP address to some of these sites triggers a "we're being attacked" alert. And that it happens if you do bulk downloads for 'too many books' - 100 rings a bell.

Thanks, BetterRed, but I wasn't bulk downloading, and since I was going through my rather large library and filling in missing metadata I doubt I was querying fast enough for it to be interpreted as an attack. Also, I got the same error on every site I tried when going through them one by one.
I've tried again today, using books I know I was able to get the metadata for previously, and still no luck. I'm completely flummoxed.
