Although the search for & works with the suggested method I'd like to swap & for ; in all authors.

I have tried various s/r tests, with character match or reg.ex but can't get it to work.
Do you have an idea?
You can do it using bulk metadata edit search and replace. The attached screen shot shows you how. However, I *strongly* advise you not to do this. You will totally break calibre's multiple author handling, making it difficult to find books by an author. "Joe Blogs; Jane Doe" will be different from "Jane Doe; Joe Blogs", and neither Jane Doe nor Joe Blogs will appear by themselves in the authors list. The tag browser author lists will become useless. And so on.
