Laid up In Lavender was first published in 1907, about the middle of Stanley J. Weyman's writing career, and contains twelve short stories set in the early 1900s. Some of the stories are mysteries, and three of them are in other short story collections under different titles.
As well as his training as a lawyer he was a churchwarden and parish councilor and lived in Wales for most of his life, which makes his asides about lawyers, clergymen, and the Welsh all the more piquant.
