It's not just 'modern standards' or even a US problem! I have to have several different cell phones just to avoid huge phone charges when I travel! Sure, I could use my iPhone with my Japanese carrier just about anywhere, but then every call I make, even across the street, will be a long distance call through Japan.
In Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore or even the US, I can walk into a shop and buy a $15 phone and $10 worth of credits to use. It takes 5 minutes in the shop. If I want more credits, I just buy a refill sim card. In Japan I have to have at least a one-year contract with a carrier, but the better carriers only offer three-year contracts. It takes 2-3 hours in the shop and costs Hundreds!!! No independent sim card carriers for sale.
