Eliot, Charles W. (editor): Harvard Classics 43: American Historical Documents. v1

This is a collection of documents that from a New England perspective shaped the US until the early 20th century. It is very slanted, almost the New England political correctness of its day. For example, Haskell's Account of the Battle of Gettysburg at times is almost jingoistic. Other sections discount actions that did not happen in and around New England such as Jamestown.

When this collection was put together the US was just emerging as a world power and colonialism was still thought to be the height of civilization. The Manifest Destiny of the western expansion had been completed and the War to End All Wars (WW-I) was still some years away.

So read them and remember that history is written by the winners. (The losers sit around and moan, "Shut up and deal.")
