That's because it was so costly to print a book, even saving a few pages from the cost of a book made a lot of difference.

Now printing costs are less prohibitive, so they space out books, even using larger fonts, and splitting what used to be a single 'old' book into two or more 'modern' books. (so they get more money out of the punters.)
