Now if they ask you extra identification when you buy dangerous chemicals or transfer very important amounts of money or something like that I would understand but this here makes little sense.
I'd suspect that they are trying to cut down on the number of purchases made with stolen credit card information or cloned credit cards.

One of my co-workers is having fun with one of her credit cards now. At some point when she made a purchase, her credit card information was stolen. Next thing she knew, she was contacted by the credit card company to let her know that several purchases outside her normal type of purchases had been made. Something about purchasing two HD TVs on the same day from different retailers triggered an flag.
