Book type and pinch zoom on kindle fire

There are two options for book type when making a fixed layout ebook for a kindle fire. These are children and comic. If you choose comic you get the nice pinch and zoom feature to enlarge the whole page including the text. But it seems navigation suffers. It seems you can't scroll backwards through the book by tapping on the left hand side of the screen.

If you set the book type to children, you are able to tap forwards and backwards through the book, but you don't get the pinch zoom feature. I was wondering if perhaps, the navigation on the comic type improves after it has been uploaded to the Amazon store. Or is this just wishful thinking?
