Stanley J. Weyman was a prolific writer of historical fiction, and a favourite author of Robert Louis Stevenson, Rafael Sabatini, and Oscar Wilde.
This book was published in 1893, and contains 12 short stories taken from the memoirs of the Duc de Sully, the prime minister of Henri de Navarre, King of France.

This second version has a considerably improved internal structure and layout, and fewer typos.
