The Monadology ( Monadologie ) (1714)
By Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716)
Translated from the original French by Robert Latta (1865–1932)
A short treatise of ninety numbered points. Leibniz argues that the basic elements of reality are not physical atoms but soul-like, non-physical entities called monads (from the Greek word for unity). These follow a pre-established harmony, laid down by God, who has made this, the best of all possible worlds.
