The change has been evolving for years. I used to be able to buy books in independent book stores each of which had a unique character and a varied selection. Today, the indies are all but gone and Borders, B&N and the like are really the only choices. I'm not sure the varied online stores are an improvement, but they certainly are adding choices to the mix again.
