Thank you thomass! I actually gave up on the stock mp3 player once I found
fbdev's awesome kinamp/mplayer combo so I haven't tried any of those. In retrospect, killing the audioserver process might've helped as well.... In any case, if someone comes across this eventually, they should be able to figure it out now.
