France, Anatole: Thaïs, v.1, 9 August 2008.

Anatole France (1844–1924)
Thaïs (1890)
Translated By Robert B. Douglas (b. 1848–)

This novel is set in 4th century Alexandria and the Egyptian desert. The monk Paphnutius is determined to leave his monastery in the desert and convert the beautiful actress and courtesan, Thaïs. But are his motives entirely pure?

The book was the inspiration for Jules Massenet’s opera of the same name.
