Amazon have by far the best bookstore and customer service in the industry. That, for me, is a significant benefit. ePub compatibility is a non-issue; any book that you can get in ePub format is also available for the Kindle (and, conversely, many Kindle books are NOT available on other platforms) and, as has been mentioned, converting between Kindle and ePub formats is easy and painless.
