Bad battery or Glo HD?

A couple of weeks ago, I was reading on my secondhand Kobo Glo HD late one night when it froze up. I restarted it, but even though the battery had been at 25% at my previous glance, the "Your battery is low 0% remaining" error screen came up.

I figured I'd misread the battery indicator and plugged it into my computer to charge up. The error screen stayed in place, but then the Kobo began rapidly heating up, so I unplugged it. It continued to get hotter, so I rushed it outside and placed it on the cold concrete; after a while, it finally cooled off.

Since then, plugging it in causes it to heat slightly, but otherwise has no effect. I tried unplugging the battery & microSD card for several minutes the hitting the power button and pushing the ‘reset’ button (as that seems to work with many electronics), but still no luck.

Anyone have any suggestions? Does it sound like replacing the battery would be at all worthwhile, or more like the Kobo Glo HD somehow fried its poor little brain?
