Rogue Space appearing above floating divs

I have placed two images with captions within two div tags, floated side by side. I have placed them within a wrapper div, and cleared them with another div underneath. Everything works fine, except for some reason, when the images appear on a page on their own, they are stuck halfway down the page, instead of where I want them at the top. When the floated images appear under text on the same page, the vertical spacing is normal. It must be something to do with the vertical alignment in the parent or something like that - can anyone help?
