Wifi error after standby

I struggling with enabling wifi after the device was in standby and I hope we'll find a solution with this thread for future reference.

Neither via Notification bar, nor via Settings app it is possible to activate Wifi. When activating the check mark, the device freezes for some time and then Wifi status says "Error".

After reboot I am able to enable Wifi, but as soon as I suspend the device and switch back on, it is stuck again.

In logcat it says "could not load wifi driver".

I do not want to do hard reset / sd recovery. There must be a way to fix this.

Any ideas?

Deleting /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf did not help.

The wifi driver seems to be compiled directly into the kernel. At least there is no wifi module in /lib/modules
