The data.stgz thingy won't work as-is on the PW2.

If the device is jailbroken, it *might* be possible to craft a proper tarball w/ KindleTool, but I'm a bit fuzzy on the details right now (and/or if it's even remotely helpful in theory).

Anyway, in your specific case, depending on exactly when the failure first happens, even if you actually had USBMS/USBNET access, that might not have been enough.

Since we still don't know how to boot the PW1/PW2 in USB download mode without opening it up, that leaves....

TL;DR: Open it up, last resort serial access.
