I don't own a Kobo, but for my reader I found I needed to plug the reader to my laptop, THEN run Adobe Digital Editions. If I ran Adobe Digital Editions then plugged in the reader it was not detected.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (running ADE through Crossover Wine though it should in theory be the same as the offical wine package).
