Your host machine's system is probably trying to auto-configure the network in the background while you're manually configuring it otherwise (e.g. on command line). It eventually fails. So: either disable USB network auto-configuration (on the host machine!), or configure it to suit the proper settings for the Kindle (but note that this does somehow not work for me since it is entangled with the MAC address, which changes).
