I have used it while on vacation to find a nearby movie theater, find out what was playing and find directions. It worked great for me. BUT, you have to have a lot of patience. The answer is that it can be used and can be very useful in an emergency. However, if you really need wireless access you probably want something better.
Also, there is no guarantee that Amazon won't eventually filter it and/or start to charge for it. They specifically advertise free wikipedia access, so that will probably continue. Any other stuff -- who knows.
