I originally thought I had backed up my stock setup before I did a manual root ~ then when I went back to try to restore it after getting something tangled up, I learned that I had used an image for the recovery SD that did not actually have enough room in it to hold a backup. When you write an image, the space in the image can be smaller than the space on the SD card (unless it is a "size agnostic" image which does some vodoo magic with its partitioning).

I believe I got the files not found message ~ there were some files inside the archive but not all that were needed because it was an incomplete backup.

I found a 1.2 flashable kernal and installed it, after clearing out all caches, then downloaded the 1.4.1 update and let it do its thing, and then I was back in business.
