You can be sloppy when you show up to return something at the store. Worst case you still walk out of the store with the item because you don't meet the return policy. When you are mailing hundreds of dollars worth of electronics, you should ensure that you are sending it to the right address and a place that is equipped to receive it and is expecting it, if you expect a refund or an exchange.
NOT saying that B&N shouldn't return to sender or whatever with an unknown package, but there is some responsibility on the returner to take the simple, appropriate steps. It's not like this is as hard as redeeming a rebate used to be...!
