i guess your concern would be the protected PRC and MOBI files. there are programs to help you remove the DRM, so that you can convert it to another format compatible to Nook or Sony...
BUT removing DRM protection can be illegal in some countries, and distributing it is definately illegal. i've never tried it so don't know how well it works.

it's marketing strategy.... there are happy owners of Neo and 302 here in the forum. the 302 has a bug in the web browser which makes it annoying (pointed by NateTheGreat somewhere in a video) but once that's fixed, i think both the readers are pretty cool.
