Hmmm. Neat thread. Not sure if Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose qualifies... but it certainly feels historical. As does Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian...

As for actually historical... heh, I usually go for short-stories... One of these days, I'll finish The Canterbury Tales.
