Eleanor H. Porter is most famous for Pollyanna but this is one of my favorites of hers.
Just David is the story of an orphan who is left in an isolated mountain village when his father, a once-great musician who later hid himself and his identity from the world, dies. The boy has nothing but two violins (which turn out to be an Amati and a Stradivarius) and his ability to create music. He is taken in by an elderly couple, out of duty, and he softens them. At the same time he and his music prove to be the innocent means of bringing estranged lovers together.
