Beyond any other issues that amazon faced with the kindle, b&n also have a fairly major disadvantage when it comes to launching internationally in that they have no actual presence outside north america.

Assuming the profit margin on the nook itself isn't bad then the combination of epub support and wifi would allow b&n to build up a userbase while they worked to setup international sales, but at the same time their hardware would be helping rival bookstores.
