Not for a work that you did not purchase. Certainly not for the distribution of the converted or pre-converted file. At least in the US. It is pretty clearly illegal and a violation of one of the bundled copyrights (reproduction, distribution). To the extent that you break DRM you are also violating the Digital Millennium Act. That said, so was dumping tea in Boston harbor and violating prohibition in the 20's yet... here we are.
