OK, maybe I didn't convey the message properly. I don't mean "it will never work", but rather something like: it's not possible to have a spec-compliant ePub 2.0.1 that's guaranteed to work in all spec-compliant readers, it may work in some readers, or even most, but i will most probably fail in unexpected ways in some other readers, and
the reader will not be to blame.
That said, simply using "position: absolute" may be a good compromise solution, provided it fails gracefully when it fails.
