Viewing azw3 files with calibre viewer

I recently converted a valid ePub file to mobi and to azw3 using the standard settings. I can read the mobi version with the calibre viewer, but not the azw3 version. All I get is a question mark, and a message that Windows can't open this file.

Should I be able to read the azw3 version with the calibre viewer? Are there any special settings I should use?

I don't have a Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire, so I can't tell if the conversion to azw3 was successful.
