The screensaver is not needed to "save" the screen. It is used on EInk readers as an indication that the device is in a low power sleep mode. So what you saw is normal.
The screen draws no power, except when it changes. This can be disconcerting. I know I was confused the first time one of my ebook readers ran out of power, since the screen was still displaying an image.
