I can only answer for the kindle.......you can lend some books, but like the nook....it depends on the publishers permission to do so.
If both kindles are tied to the same account, they can share any book, but it must be downloaded from the computer....not a difficult thing to do, and Amazon is very good at walking you thru problems........there is even a "call back" service where they call you back almost immediately.
There is , of course, different geo restrictions with any reader......good luck with your choice!
