The proportion of Nexus device sales compared to sales of Android devices by Samsung, Amazon, et. al. is minuscule. And because they sold their souls to the carriers for market share, they will never regain leverage in that relationship. Motorola can't even get Verizon to update phones that are now produced by Google itself.

Google is no more gaining control over the platform than a gnat gains control of an elephant.
