It does to sound waves.
Light can obviously be transferred, as it's made of (rather weird) particles, but no weirder than electrons or even buckyballs (C-60).
Sounds waves are pressure changes. Changes in pressure are caused by back-and-forth movement of molecules of air. If the transporter was only one way, the sounds would be weirdly distorted on the other side.
