Anti-glare film + full brightness will handle outdoors for the NC... adequately. It really depends on how important the kids books are (and if there are any you actually want to buy for the kids) - if you're mostly using the ereader to burn through paperbacks I say an e-ink reader; but browsing the internet, reading magazines, pdfs (especially illustrated ones), kids books, are material, then NOOKcolor.
