If you hold Alt + Power then slip something into the reset button, it will go into the right mode for the updater.
Unfortunately, that didn't help me one bit.
I bought mine today at Menard's - they were selling for $149.99 around Christmas (I was looking then), and now they're $99.99 with a $50 MIR. I figured what the heck and picked one up for myself and one for my mom. The WiFi didn't work right on mine, so I found the update, spent forever before realizing the driver won't load on Windows 7, and finally got it done...only to be left with The Brick.
I'll be going back to Menard's tomorrow to exchange it. Hopefully the next one will have functioning WiFi.
tl;dr: The update will break your e-reader!!!
PS: Any word from any of the "Linux gurus"? I'm extremely interested in replacing the existing Linux install with Android...
